When we talk about hearing loss it describes the inability of hearing either for short time or permanently.. Hearing
is measured in decibels (dB), this scale assesses the degree of hearing
loss. For example, if the scale of decibels shows 71-90 dB hearing loss,
it is a case of "severe" hearing loss. Degree of hearing loss or
hearing problems is different in case of adults and in case of children.
Disabling hearing loss in case of adults is the hearing loss which is
more than 40dB in their better hearing ear and in case of children it is
the hearing loss which is greater than 30dB in their better hearing
ear. The majority of the persons suffering from hearing problems are
from the countries having low and middle incomes.
Hearing problems or hearing loss can be caused by complications at birth or maternal rubella, certain infectious diseases like meningitis, taking ototoxic drugs. It is said that exposure to a noisy underground railway for just fifteen minutes a day overtime can cause permanent loss of hearing. Listening to mp3 players at high volumes can cause permanent hearing loss to the people. Chronic ear infections, accumulation of fluid in ears, working with the machineries that produce noise continuously, injury to the ear can cause hard of hearing as well. Surveys say over 90% of the children who are deaf are born to the hearing parents. Five out of every thousand newborn can be the victim of hearing loss. Hearing loss with age is caused by degeneration of sensory cells. People who are of the age of more than 65 years, one out of three such people suffers from hearing loss.
Statistics and surveys corroborates that the people who are deaf or have hard of hearing can talk through sign languages even if they are at great distances without the use of amplification. Deaf people cultivate enthusiasm towards observing something with the smell, feeling or taste of that particular thing to recompense their loss of hearing.
If the deafness of a child is identified early with appropriate services, they can also prepare communication skills in the same way as their hearing peers. There are medications and surgical ways also to intervene hearing problems by using prescribed antibiotics, removing ear wax and washing the ear canal and dissolving it with doctor prescribed ear drops. Immunizing children against chronic and infectious childhood diseases, immunizing women at their age of reproduction against rubella, promoting safer childbirth would minimize the problem of deafness or hearing loss.
